Our Story

Three generations of southern home cooking in Rome, Georgia

How It All Started

The story of Pick-O-Deli actually begins up the road on Rockmart Highway, where James P. Turner Sr. ran a frozen food distribution center. After years of producing and distributing items like pizza pockets and BBQ, Mr. Turner decided he wanted to serve people something fresh. In 1981, he rented a small building and started cooking.

It quickly became the go-to spot for biscuits. Everything was made from scratch, and the meats were prepared right there in the store. People could tell the difference, and word spread fast.

Mr. Turner then bought the building next door, which had been an old convenience store. He gutted the place and turned it into a sandwich shop that also carried some groceries. Several different ideas were tried out in that space, each one getting a little closer to what the community really wanted.

From Sandwich Shop to Cafeteria

In 1985, country meat and vegetables took off. People loved the homemade country food and the family atmosphere that came with it. That was the moment everything clicked into place.

Jimmy Turner Jr. had come to work with his father in 1983, and together they built the business into something the whole community counted on. After some years, Jimmy bought the corporation from his dad, and Turner Food Systems was born. The company ran both Pick-O-Deli Cafeteria and the Gravy Boat Restaurant.

As the family always said, “You can get your breakfast at one place and stick around long enough to get your lunch at another place.”

A Family Legacy

Jimmy's two daughters grew up in the restaurant. They spent their childhood helping their dad grind sausage while standing on milk crates, learning the business from the ground up before they could even see over the counter. They later joined the staff officially and worked alongside the family through their college years.

When James Turner Sr. passed away in 2014, Jimmy purchased the Pick-O-Deli building and property from his sisters. Debbie Turner White took over the Gravy Boat, and Turner Food Systems was dissolved. Each business went its own way, but the heart of what Mr. Turner Sr. started remained the same.

Three generations have now poured themselves into this place. The recipes, the work ethic, the commitment to doing things the right way: all of it has been handed down, and all of it shows up on your plate every single day.

The Riverside Chapter

In November 2020, Pick-O-Deli opened the doors to a brand new location at 595 Riverside Pkwy NE. The larger space gave the team room to serve even more of Rome's hungry families, while keeping everything that made the original location special.

The food is still made from scratch every morning. The atmosphere still feels like home. And the Turner family is still right here, making sure every plate that goes out is one they'd be proud to eat themselves.

Three Generations Strong

The tradition continues. What started as a small biscuit shop has become a Rome institution, still built on the same values of scratch-made food and genuine hospitality.

What We Stand For

The same principles that guided Mr. Turner Sr. in 1981 are the ones we live by today.

Made from Scratch

Every dish is prepared fresh in our kitchen, just like it was when Mr. Turner Sr. first started making biscuits in 1981. No shortcuts, no compromises.

Family Atmosphere

We treat every guest the way we'd treat family walking through our own front door. That warmth has been part of who we are for over forty years.

Southern Tradition
